Etymology

Calfway Fm & CAlfway Wood, 1830 M, (semita que tendit versus ) Calphaye 1255–90CirenR , Galfehagh 1459MinAcct , Calfehagh '1461 ib, woodCawpho 1599Comm , Calfee 1609AOMB 394. 'Calf enclosure', v. calf , haga . The change in the second el. to -way is paralleled by Northway (ii, 54 infra , cf. Phonol. § 42c ). Calfway Fm is ¼ mile from a lane from Bisley to Cheltenham which is now called Calf Way, doubtless because of the development of the p.n. to that form.
