Etymology

Stoop Bridge, Stoop Lane (both 6″). Cf. le Stulpe in London hie way 1609LRMB , the Stoup 1794 Shawcross. stoop is a common Essex word for a short post fixed in the earth as a boundary-mark, v. stoop sb. 1 in NED. In field-names we have three examples of Stulps and one of Stulp , as also Stulpes in Ashen (1583Ct ).
