Etymology

Seven Kings is Sevekyngg (es )1285Ass , Sevyn Kynges 1456 ER xxxii. No certainty is possible. Local tradition derives the name from a meeting here of seven Saxon kings. The only alternative possibility is to derive it from Seofecingas , 'the settlement of the people of Seofeca ,' a pers. name found also in Seacourt (Berks), Seofecanwyrð BCS 1002. v. ing .
