Etymology

The ecclesiastical parish of Bidston contained the townships 1. Bidston cum Ford (now included in Birkenhead infra ), 2. Birkenhead (an extraparochial liberty created out of Claughton township to contain the demesne of Birkenhead Priory, chartered as a County Borough in 1877, including Arrowe, Landican, Noctorum, Prenton, Thingwall and Woodchurch from Woodchurch parish 261supra , Upton from Overchurch parish 305supra , Bidston cum Ford and Claughton cum Grange from Bidston parish, and Tranmere from Bebington parish 245supra ), 3. Claughton cum Grange (part was in Woodchurch parish, all now included in Birkenhead supra ), 4. Moreton cum Lingham (now included, with Saughall Massie, in Wallasey County Borough 323infra ), 5. Saughall Massie (cf. prec.).
