Etymology

Helton Tarn, 1770 Bthm, 1823 M, Heltontern (e )1278Ass 9, 1279 ib 7, 1280FF , 1293 Kend ii, 252, 1354ChancM . The most likely inter- pretation of this p.n., Hilton and Helton, (ii, 103, 200 infra ) is 'farmstead on the slope', v. helde , tūn , but, as Ekwall notes, OE  helde 'tansy' and ON  hjallr 'shed' are possibilities, v. tjǫrn 'lake'.
