Bincombe Wood

Early-attested site in the Parish of Malmesbury

Etymology

Bincombe Wood. Grundy (ii, 43) identifies this with Beucumbe (BCS 922) and suggests that Beucumbe is a mis-reading for Bencumbe . The identification may well be correct but examination of the MS gives no support for the idea of a mis-reading.If Bencumbe is the right reading, the corrupt reading must be of still earlier date.
