Etymology

Poke Mill (lost), le Poke Miln 1473 AD vi, -mills 1753 PR(Brt), the Poak Milne 1664Rydal , Poak Mill 1787 PR(Brt), 1811EnclA , TA , Polk Mills 1787 ClarkM, cf. also Pokeholme 1473 AD vi.The mill was by the Lowther at grid 83–525276. The etymology is uncertain, but it could be connected with ME  poke 'bag', perhaps in the sense 'meal-bag', cf. ModE  dial. poker 'a carrier who delivers meal from a mill', poke-cart 'miller's cart', etc. v. myln .
