Etymology

Rest Dod, 1865 OS, Restdode l. 12Lowth , Rostdode (sic)13 CW xviii, 151, the name of a prominent mountain at the head of the Deer Forest. The second el. is ME  dodde, NCy dial. dod 'the rounded summit of a hill', as in Dod Hill (i, 190supra ). The meaning of Rest - is not certain; it could be ME  rest 'rest, resting place' as in Rest Park (YW iv, 61), cf. also Resting Stone (YW vi, 227).
