Etymology

Cawdale (lost), Caluedal (le )1220–47, 1265, 1278Lowth , 1279Ass 10, Calverdal 1266 Lanc 445, Cal (e )wedale 1278Lowth , 1279Ass 10, Caluesdale 1279 ib 8. 'Valley where calves were reared', calf (gen.plur. calfa , calfra ), dæl (dalr). This cannot be identical with Cawdale in Bampton (ii, 194supra ), nor from the charter boundaries can it be the same as Caudale in Patterdale (ii, 224infra ); in 1265Lowth (BR 18) it is described as in Bannerdale.
