Etymology

'Patrick's valley', from the OIr  pers.n. Patraic , ME  Patric , which continued in use in We, as in Patric son of Bernard (Docker and Grayrigg) l. 12 CW xxiv, 339, Patric son of Thomas (Mauld's Meaburn) 1234–6 MdMb 340, (Hugill) 1256 Ass 69, Patrick son of Patrick Brounson (Ambleside) 1336 Kend ii, 41, etc., but no one of that name can be identified with Patterdale. The dedication of the local church and of St Patrick's Well (infra ) was probably suggested by the name of the valley (as with Martindale ii, 215supra ); the chapel here was simply called capella de Patrikedale in 1348 Lanc 461.
