Etymology

Swarth Fell, Swarthfell 1220–47 Lanc 437, Swartefell 1247 Ipm, Swartfeld 1256Ass 4, Swartfel 1278Lowth , Swarth Fell 1770 Young, 1823 M. 'The black hill', v. svartr , fjall , but the first el. may be from the stream-name Swarthbeck (prec.), perhaps originally Svarta , as Ekwall has proposed (RN 385). Cf. Swarth Fell (ii, 18supra ).
