Etymology

Rooking, Roukin l. 12Lowth , 13 CW xviii, 151, Rookings 1787 ClarkeM, Rookins 1829 Dir, Rooking Gill 1860OS . Probably 'rough chasm', v. rūh and ON  kinn 'slope', ME  kyne 'crack, fissure, chasm', as in Barkin (i, 24supra ); it would refer to the narrow gorge of Goldrill Beck at this point.
