Etymology

The first el. is OE  sadol 'saddle', used to describe a feature resembling a saddle in shape or appearance such as a ridge, but the exact application is not clear; cf. OE  sadolhongra BCS 1282, Sadelhowe (Tadcaster East) pt iv infra ; v. worð 'enclosure'.
