Rochdale

Parish in the County of West Riding of Yorkshire

Etymology

Rochdale is in Lancashire (La 54), and the townships of Saddleworth and Springhead, now united as Saddleworth Urban District, are in the Tame valley in the western watershed of the Pennines (cf. SadD 465). Saddleworth was formerly divided into four quarters or hamlets called meres : Friar Mere, Lord's Mere, Quick Mere and Shaw Mere (Langd).
