Etymology

Castleshaw, Castylshaw 1544 SadD, Castleshaw (e )1581 FF, 1657 WillS. 'Copse near the fort', v. castel , sceaga . The name refers to a Roman fort, traces of which have been found near the Roman road from Manchester to Cambodunum (cf. Slack 303supra ).
