Baffle Beck, cf. Bawghill Yate 1576 Wheater, Bawghell Yate 1577 Spoff, Bowhill-yate 1767 Comm, Baffle Gate 1839 'Rounded hill', v. balg , hyll , geat 'gate'; the name may be connected with the f.n. Belghagre in Kearby (41supra ), which seems to contain the mutated form belg .
