Historical Forms

  • Acke l.12 Font
  • Hacke 13 ib
  • Hackfall 1614 Vyner
  • Hackfull (sic) 1614 FF

Etymology

Hack Fall, Acke l. 12 Font, Hacke 13 ib, Hackfall 1614Vyner , Hackfull (sic)1614 FF. There is no waterfall here, though the R. Ure runs down a rocky twisting channel. The name refers in fact to the extensive wooded bank which overlooks the R. Ure, and the second el. is from OE  (ge)fall 'a place where trees have been felled'. The first el. is doubtless OE  haca 'a hook' sometimes used of the sharp bend in a river such as the R. Ure makes here.
