Etymology

Ellershaw, Aluerschaghe 12 Font, Ellerescahe 13 ib, Ellershaw 1540 Fount, Allershawe 1596 (Deed ). 'Ælfhere's copse' from the OE  pers.n. Ælfhere (as in Allerton Mauleverer 12supra ); the later forms are due to the influence of alor and elri 'alder', which might in fact be original, with Aluer - as an occasional spelling.
