Etymology

Whetstone Bank (lost), 1696YAS Dd 117, probably identical with Whettyngstan 1307 YI. v. hwet-stān 'whetstone' (ME  whettinge 'whetting', stān ). It was in the south of the parish and possibly in or near the R. Ribble, where at one place good whetstones could even lately be found, as Dr Raistrick points out; cf. also Ewcross 219supra .
