Stainpapan (lost), Stanpapan 1190, 1356 Furn, Stainpapan 1220 ib, Staynpapan in Langestrogh '1338 ib, Stanepapane Ric 2 Whit, Stampapan (sic for Stainpapan )1401 Furn. 'Papan's stone', from ON  steinn and a pers.n. Papan , which, according to Ekwall (ScandsCelts 47), might well be an ON  adaptation of an Irish pers.n. *Popan , from popa 'master'. This p.n. has the typical Irish inversion of the els. (cf. Introd.). According to the bounds of Selside recorded in Furn i, 200, Stainpapan was between Cold Keld on Cam Fell (supra ) and Green Field in Langstrothdale (116supra ) in the north-west corner of the parish. v.
