Etymology

v. camb 'a ridge', gata , hūs , sīde . The name refers to the great ridge between Camb Beck and Gayle Beck, which stretches over into Wensleydale (YN). The road referred to as Cambesgate is a Roman road from Ingleton to Bainbridge (YN).
