Etymology

'Stony ford', v. steinn (probably replacing OE  stān), ford , cf. Stainforth i, 12supra . The ford may have crossed the R. Ribble to Little Stainforth or may have carried the road up Ribblesdale across Stainforth Beck. For the affixes v. Bargh Hill infra , frere 'friar' (to distinguish it from Little or Knight Stainforth infra ), Craven 1supra .
