Historical Forms

  • Cambok, Cambou 13 Percy
  • Cammock banck 1580 Skp

Etymology

Cammock, Cambok , Cambou 13 Percy, Cammock banck 1580Skp 24.In view of the later spelling there can be little doubt that Cambok is the correct form and the name is therefore to be taken with Cam Beck (Cu 7), Camboc , later Camock . The latter is a r.n. from a Brit  *Cambāco - (v. cambo- 'crooked', -āco-, a Brit adj. suffix used to form p.ns. and r.ns.) and means 'crooked one'. Cammock refers to a prominent lofty hill in a bend in the R. Ribble, and the hill was doubtless named from this bend in the river. A similar problem is presented by Crummack 229infra .
