Historical Forms

  • Roomehouses 1587,1642 WillY

Etymology

Rome, 1561 WillY, 1812 Whit 137, Roomehouses 1587, 1642 WillY, Roome 1656 WillS. This is no doubt a transferred name from Rome; the Roome spellings would be the normal development of ME  Rome which was still current for the Italian p.n. in English as late as the nineteenth century (NED s.v. Rome ).
