Etymology

Stockdale, Stockthorpe (lost), Stocadale c. 1160Sawl 117, Sto (c )kedale 13 ib 106, 117d, Stokdale 1547 WillY, Stockdaile Howsse 1572 ib, and associated with it is Stokethorp 13Sawl 117d. Probably OE  stoc 'place' in some such sense as 'outlying cattle farm', v. dæl 'valley', þorp 'outlying farm'; it is unlikely to be stocc 'tree-stump' as the place stands high on the mountain just below the rough rocky moor and well above the tree-line.
