Etymology

'Tīr's nook of land', v. halh . The pers.n. is an OE  Tīr , not found independently unless Tirus (DB) is a Latinised example; it is a short form of pers.ns. like Tīrweald , Tīrwulf , etc. It occurs in other p.ns. like Tarsett Nb 193, Terrington Nf and Treswell Nt 61. Tyers Hill i, 96supra has a different origin.
