'Yoghan's clearing', v. þveit . The pers.n. is an ON adaptation of OIr  Eogan , MIr  Eoghan , which is a native Celtic name (from *Ivogenos ), v. Introd. There was a pers.n. Ioghan in Scandinavia, but since it is not found before the end of the fifteenth century it would appear to be a late spelling of Jóhan , and unlikely to be the immediate source of this p.n.
