Etymology

'Eagles' cliff', v. earn , clif . On the early appearance of the spelling Arne - for Erne - cf. Armley iii, 210supra . The name clearly referred originally to the great limestone scar south of the village called Arnberg Scar (infra ) which has a similar meaning.
