Etymology

'The long stretch of marshy ground overgrown with brushwood', v. lang , strōd , and dæl 'valley'. The forms with -stro (t )her arise from the influence of the OE derivative strōðer which meant much the same, whilst those with -stro (g )he , etc. are due to AN  treatment of -th - (cf. High Melton i, 76supra ). The name refers more particularly to the long deep valley of the R. Wharfe between Buckden and Beckermonds, but the medieval chase or hunting forest was probably coterminous with the extensive township of Buckden.
