Etymology

'Ūhtrēd's copse', v. sceaga . The earliest spelling appears to be ON  skáli 'a shieling', but this may be an AN  inverted spelling which could arise when -aga and -áli had both been vocalised to -aw . The pers.n. is OE  Ūhtrēd , which is common in Craven in the twelfth century (YCh vii passim ) and long continued in use in Y (as in Ughtred Shuttleworth 1618 FF 118).
