Etymology

'Hauk's dairy-farm', from the ON  pers.n. Haukr and wīc, which is sometimes used to denote a small secondary settlement. The second el. is hardly likely to be ON  vík 'creek, inlet, a hollow' as that el. seems to be found only in coastal p.ns. in the Danelaw. On the later forms with Hack - for Hawk - cf. Phonol. § 8.
