Historical Forms

  • Clenewater (sic) 1327 SR
  • Clevewater 1377 SAC35,33

Etymology

Clevewaters Fm (6″) was the home of Agnes de Clenewater (sic)1327 SR and is called Clevewater in 1377 SAC 35, 33.Miss Holgate, after personal observation of the site, confirms Lower's statement that the brooks here go in opposite direc- tions, one into the Adur and the other into the Ouse, so that the house is on a slight but definite watershed which may well have given rise to the name cleave-water .
