Etymology

Berth Lane (6″) may preserve the name of the DB manor of Berte .Birth Fm is called Bath in 1697, the Bearth in 1759 (ParReg), Birth Fm in 1823 (G). Professor Ekwall suggests that this may be an iþja -derivative of bære , 'swine-pasture,' of the same type as that noted in Frant infra 373.
