Etymology

Hobney is Hobenye in 1302 (SAC 49, 15), Hobney (1442MinAcct , 1527 SAC 45, 163, 1840TA ). This is clearly one of the islands (v. eg ) in the marshes. The first element is probably a pers. name. Cf. Hobbe , a pers. name found in Lines c. 1220 (AD LS 270).
