Etymology

If the Pipe-Roll forms belong to this place, and this seems probable, then the full form of the name was Pydelingas , i.e. 'people of Pydel .' For this pers. name, a diminutive of Pyda , v. supra 324. At the eastern end of the county y may well appear only as e , which with early assimilation of d and l would give Pellings (cf. supra 297). Later the vowel was probably lengthened under the influence of ME  pele , ModEng peel 'fortified house.'
