Etymology

Southings (6″) is Sowthynnestenement 1435 Pens, Southins 1625 SRS 14, 77 and is to be associated with Wm de Southinne (1327 SR) and Richard de Southynne (1340 NI). In 1327 SR there is mention also of a Simon de Northinne . The names must have referred to meri who lived in buildings at the north and south ends of the parish. Cf. Netherin supra 431.
