Dern Wood (6″) is Derne (grange called) c. 1240 Pens, Derne 1275 SRS 29et passim to 1428 FA, the Derne 1513Lewes Deeds .Probably a derivative of the adj. dierne, 'hidden.' 'It accurately describes the locality' (SAC 14, 210).
