Etymology

Sharpenhurst Fm is Sharpenhurst (1312 Ipm), Sharpherst (1412Sele 31), Sherpenystlond (1439Bodl 96) and gave name to Godfrey de Scearpherst (early 13thBodl 87). There is a 'sharp' hill here so the name probably means 'steep wooded hill,' v. scearp , hyrst . Cf. also Sharpshaw (So), Sherpshaghe 1345 FF (p).
