Marlands

Early-attested site in the Parish of Itchingfield

Historical Forms

  • Morelandes 1579 SRS3,117
  • Marelands 1579 SRS14,69

Etymology

Marlands is Morelandes (1579 SRS 3, 117), Marelands (1579 SRS 14, 69). The first form is probably an error and we may have a further example of Sussex mare for mere (cf. Marehill supra 153). There are one or two meres a little to the southeast. Another possibility is, since the place lies on the parish boundary, that we have a compound of OE  (ge)mære, hence 'boundary-lands.'
