Etymology

Other forms are without interest except to note that e -forms preponderate in the 13th, u -forms in the 14th and 15th cents., with very rare i -forms. Sometimes the feudal addition is put first, e.g. Pyrpountesherst (1359 Pat), Parpoynthurst (1439 Cicestr). The name is reduced to Harstpount in 1518–29 (ECP 5, 301) and expanded to Hurst upon ye point in 1722 (SRS 9, 256).

'Wooded hill,' v. hyrst . Robert de Pierpoint held the manor already in DB and it is West in relation to Herstmonceux infra 479.
