Etymology

Wanbarrow Fm is recorded as Wanbarrow in 1714 (SAC 25, 167). The name would seem to be identical with Wanborough (W), Wenbeorgan , Wænbeorgan (dat. pl.) in BCS 478, DBWemberge (v. Ekblom, PN W 167) and Wanborough (Sr), DBWeneberge . The etymology of these names is uncertain. Possibly the first element is OE  wenn , wænn , 'wen,' the whole name being descriptive of some hill or barrow which by its size or shape suggested such.
