Deanhouse Fm

Early-attested site in the Parish of Hurstpierpoint

Historical Forms

  • Deneland in Perpoundhurst 1481 IpmR
  • atte Denne 1296 SR

Etymology

Deanhouse Fm is probably identical with Deneland in Perpoundhurst (1481 IpmR) and may have given name to Walter atte Denne (1296 SR). If so the prefix is denn , 'woodland pasture,' with later alteration to a more common form. All this area was formerly well wooded.
