Historical Forms

  • Shortefelde 1316 FA
  • Shortesfeld 1400 MinAcct

Etymology

Shortsfield (lost) is Shrottesfeld (1296, 1332 SR), Shortefelde (1316 FA), Shortesfeld (1400MinAcct ). According to Cartwright (338) it was chiefly in the parishes of Horsham, Rusper and Nuthurst. The name is apparently 'clearing of a man named Short ,' with a curious metathesis in the SR forms to Shrot .
