Etymology

The pers. name Cēorra is on record in OE and there may have been a strong form side by side with it. The first form of Chesworth is sufficiently late however for an original form Cēolrēdes -worþ , from the common pers. name Cēolrēd , to have been reduced to Cherseworth by 1281, for Cer (r )ed is found early as a form of that name (v. Searle s. n .). In any case the names Cēorr or Cēorra are probably pet-forms for this name or for Cēolrīc . Hence, 'enclosure (v. worþ) of Ceorr or of Ceolred.'
