Etymology

St Ives Fm is Sentie 1521 Sutton 348, Sentye 1538 LP, Senys 1564DuLa , Seynt Tye 1565Pat (VCH ), Saynt Tye 1590 SRS 19, 51, Tighe al. Saint Tye 1636 SRS 19, 51, Saint Tyes 1792Recov , 1813 O.S. This is probably a compound of the element sænget , 'burning,' discussed in PN Wo 37, and teag . This element is prolific in the production of imaginary saints, as in St Chloe and St Clair (loc. cit .) and St Ive here.
