Etymology

Wellhead Wood is probably the site of Waliland in 1086 DB and appears as Welilonde (c. 1230 Pens) and Welilonde (c. 1248, c. 1260 ib.). It is Wellond Felds in Ewhurst in 1535 (VE).This would seem to be one of the numerous examples of OE  ing (a ) appearing as i in ME forms in this part of the county (cf. note on Mountfield supra 474) and the name must go back to OE  wiellinga-land , 'land of the dwellers by the stream,' v. wielle , ing , land and also s. n. Stoneland supra 272.
