Etymology

Hamly Bridge is Ambeleg (h )12th SAC 5, 157, 1470Will , Ombelegh 1288Ass (p), Gt . Amly 1823 G, and was the home of Henry de Ambeleg ' (1285CplM ) or Hambelegh (1296 SR) and Wm de Ambelegh (1327 SR). The bridge is first named as Ambeleghbrigge c. 1450 (Hailsham). It probably contains the same pers. name as Amberstone infra 435 and may be named from the same man, as they are only three miles apart, v. leah .
