Etymology

'tun of the dwellers by the street/ i.e. Stane Street, v. stræt , hæme . The DB form suggests that the original form of the name was simpler, namely strǣt -tūn rather than strǣt -hǣma -tūn .In the 12th cent. 3 forms with a and 6 with e have been noted, in the 13th cent. 2 with a , 7 with e , and 1 with i , and after that forms with e are general, except Strittington 1696 MarC.
