Etymology

'(At) the high tun,' v. heah . The reason for the epithet is not certain, but both the Hampnetts lie just above the 50 ft. contour, where the land begins to rise up to the downs from the dead level of the coastal districts. For the diminutive French et -suffix, v. IPN 94 and cf. Hampnett (Gl). Such a form was to be expected in the neighbourhood of Halnaker, cf. supra 67.
