Etymology

Naylands (6″) (locally Nayland) is Neyland 1313 Cl, Ne (e )lond 1542 and 1573 SAC 48, 68 and 74, Nylands 1601 SRS 14, 315.The name would seem to be OE  egland, with the common affixed n (v. æt ), but the topography is difficult. Naylands lies high, with deep valleys on three sides. Possibly the original settlement was by the river below.
